Complex Trauma Therapy | Racial Trauma | Intergenerational Healing

Trauma & PTSD Therapy in Ontario & Quebec

Trauma does not announce itself with a single dramatic event. For many people, particularly those who have experienced systemic oppression, racial violence, family dysfunction, or chronic adverse childhood experiences, trauma is the water they have always been swimming in. It lives in the body, in the nervous system, in the patterns of relationship and self-protection that were once survival strategies and are now limitations.

At KalmMiMind, trauma-informed liberation healing recognizes that healing is not simply about returning to who you were before. It is about becoming who you were never allowed to be: free, embodied, and sovereign in your own life.

What Is Trauma-Informed Liberation Therapy?

Trauma-informed care is a clinical framework that acknowledges the widespread impact of trauma and integrates that understanding into every aspect of treatment. It means that every interaction in therapy is designed with the awareness that trauma affects how people feel safe, trust, and connect.

Liberation Psychology Lens

Liberation healing extends this framework by acknowledging that many forms of trauma are not purely personal, they are political. Racism, colonialism, homophobia, poverty, gender-based violence, and ableism are not abstract concepts. They are lived experiences with measurable psychological consequences. At KalmMiMind, we integrate trauma-informed principles with a liberation psychology lens, a framework developed from the work of scholars including Ignacio Martín-Baró and expanded by Black, Indigenous, and feminist therapists who recognized that healing cannot be separated from justice.

Types of Trauma We Treat

Providing specialized, evidence-based care for the full spectrum of traumatic experiences.

Complex PTSD and Developmental Trauma

Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) arises from prolonged, repeated trauma, often beginning in childhood. It differs from single-incident PTSD in its pervasiveness, affecting identity, emotional regulation, relationships, and a person's fundamental sense of safety in the world.

Symptoms include chronic shame, emotional dysregulation, dissociation, difficulty trusting others, and a fragmented sense of self. Our therapists are specifically trained in evidence-based approaches for C-PTSD, including EMDR, Somatic Experiencing, and IFS.

Racial Trauma and Systemic Oppression

Racial trauma, also called Race-Based Traumatic Stress (RBTS), occurs as a result of experiencing or witnessing racism, discrimination, and racial violence. In Ontario and Quebec, Black, Indigenous, South Asian, East Asian, and other racialized communities navigate these experiences daily.

Racial trauma can manifest as hypervigilance, anxiety, depression, anger, and grief. At KalmMiMind, our therapists who specialize in racial trauma understand this is not a symptom to be managed but a wound inflicted by unjust systems, and our healing approaches reflect that understanding.

Intergenerational and Historical Trauma

Some wounds are inherited. Research in epigenetics has demonstrated that trauma can leave biological markers that are passed across generations. Indigenous communities, descendants of Holocaust survivors, children of refugees, and descendants of enslaved peoples often carry grief, fear, and coping patterns that predate their own birth.

Intergenerational healing work at KalmMiMind honors this complexity and helps clients understand their family systems through a trauma lens.

Sexual and Gender-Based Violence

Survivors of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and gender-based abuse deserve care that centers their experience without re-traumatizing them. Our therapists are trained in trauma-sensitive approaches that prioritize safety, pacing, and client agency at every stage of the healing process. We move at the speed of trust.
