Anti-Oppressive Therapy in Ontario & Quebec
Mental health does not exist in a vacuum. It is shaped by the social, political, economic, and cultural conditions in which people live. Racism, colonialism, poverty, ableism, homophobia, sexism, and other forms of systemic oppression are not abstract forces. They produce measurable psychological harm in the people who experience them. A therapy practice that ignores this reality is not neutral. It is complicit.
At KalmMiMind, social justice is not a marketing claim. It is a clinical commitment woven into how we train our therapists, how we build our practice, how we set our fees, and how we engage with the communities we serve. Anti-oppressive care means that we do not locate the source of your suffering solely within you. We examine the systems that shaped your experience, and we work toward both individual healing and the conditions for collective liberation.
What Is Anti-Oppressive Therapy?
Anti-oppressive therapy is a clinical framework that applies principles from social justice theory, critical race theory, feminist psychology, and liberation psychology to the therapeutic relationship.
It recognizes that the power dynamics in the therapy room mirror, and are shaped by, power dynamics in society, and it works actively to address those dynamics rather than pretend they do not exist.

In Practice
This means therapists who acknowledge their own social location and privilege. It means treatment plans that consider the social determinants of mental health. It means refusing to pathologize responses to oppression. And it means affirming that resistance, anger, and grief in the face of injustice are not symptoms. They are appropriate and healthy responses to real conditions.
Who We Serve
Providing culturally responsive and accessible care tailored to specific lived experiences.
Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour
BIPOC communities in Ontario and Quebec carry disproportionate mental health burdens shaped by racism, colonialism, and structural inequity. At KalmMiMind, BIPOC clients are served by therapists trained in culturally responsive care, who understand the specific impacts of racial trauma, and who do not require clients to educate them on the basics of their own oppression.
Activists & Social Justice Workers
The mental health needs of activists are specific and often underserved. Vicarious trauma from bearing witness to injustice, moral injury, burnout from engaging with resistant systems, and grief over losses in movements are real clinical issues. We offer support that honors the importance of the work while tending to the person doing it.
Working Class & Low-Income Individuals
Access to mental health care should not depend on economic privilege. KalmMiMind is committed to accessible care, including sliding scale fees and reduced cost options. We recognize that economic stress is a significant mental health stressor and that poverty is a structural condition, not a personal failure.
